Worried Your Dog Won’t Behave for Photos? Here’s Why They Absolutely Can.

If you live anywhere along the Barrington Coast, the Great Lakes, Newcastle or beyond, you’ve probably heard of someone putting off a professional dog photography experience because their dog “won’t behave”. I hear it all the time, and honestly, it’s one of the most common reasons people hesitate to book.

So let me tell you something straight from the heart, your dog doesn’t need to behave perfectly for their photos. They just need to be themselves, and that is where the real magic happens.

Every dog has their own agenda, and sometimes that includes chasing a fly. These moments often become the most loved portraits.

Dogs Don’t Need to Sit Still, They Just Need Time

Whether you visit my countryside studio in Wootton or meet me on one of our stunning Barrington Coast beaches, every dog begins the same way. They sniff, explore, survey the scene and work out what this new adventure is all about. It’s completely normal.

I give every dog time to settle. There’s no rush. A new environment is full of scents and sounds, so they’re allowed to wander, get comfortable and feel safe before we start creating portraits.

Dogs always take time to explore new places, and these gentle moments often become favourites.

I Work Fast, So Your Dog Doesn’t Need To

You might be surprised to know that ninety percent of the images people fall in love with aren’t taken while a dog is sitting still. They come from the in-between moments, the quick looks, the silly expressions, the bursts of joy, the softness in their eyes.

My camera is fast, and I know exactly how to work with dogs who wiggle, zoom, sniff, bounce or do all of the above at once. Whether it’s a studio session, a countryside session on the farm, or a dreamy beach session at sunset, your dog’s natural energy is part of the story we capture.

Movement is never a problem. Some of the best portraits happen while dogs are simply enjoying themselves.

Comfort Matters, and Dogs Know a Good Vibe When They Feel It

Inside the studio, you’ll find cosy rugs, cushions, a beautifully inviting bed and lounge, and my signature vintage timber boxes that so many dogs adore. Some jump straight onto the bed for a cuddle, others choose the lounge, and plenty of them proudly perch on those timber boxes as if they’re posing for a magazine cover. They seem to pick the spot that feels right for them, and that comfort shows in every portrait.

Out on the property, Luna’s Circle Playground gives dogs the freedom to explore safely, which helps them feel secure and confident.

When a dog feels comfortable, they show their true personality, and that’s exactly what I’m photographing.

Comfort goes a long way. Most dogs settle beautifully once they realise the studio is made just for them.

Over the years, I’ve photographed rescue dogs, nervous dogs, high-energy puppies, senior dogs, reactive dogs, dogs who don’t like strangers and dogs who get the zoomies at the smell of fresh air. Every single one of them has had a story worth telling.

And that’s the heart of it. No matter your dog’s quirks, challenges or unstoppable enthusiasm, I know how to work with them.

Personality is everything. Some dogs sing their way through a session, and it makes for the best photos.
