Pet Photography 52 Weeks Project – Week 31 – Bokeh

Welcome to Week 31 of the Pet Photography 52 Weeks Project.  This week’s theme is “Bokeh” … those scrumptious beads of colour and light that make a dog photo magical.

Dreamy, creamy bokeh

As I am primarily a natural light and on-location photographer, I am always looking at the light and the environment around me. Nothing makes a dog look more stunning than a backdrop of gorgeous bokeh. Bokeh is “the visual quality of the out-of-focus areas of a photographic image, especially as rendered by a particular lens” (thanks Google for that definition!).

I arrived at the farm early this afternoon with the #3Dogkateers and once we’d settled in and had a bite to eat and a cup of tea, it was just the right time to go out and create some images with bokeh. In Australia our sunsets are very early at the moment, around 5pm. Our farm is quite hilly so it’s a matter of chasing the light as we get into the late afternoon. I’m really enjoying learning about the light on our land and the best spots to shoot at depending on the time of day and the desired outcomes.

So we set about creating some photos featuring bokeh in the background. I used my Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens for these photos on my Canon 5D Mark IV camera. I shot all these images with the lens wide open at a 2.8 aperture.

You can see through the images how the colours change according to the position of the sun in the sky, the colour of the foliage too. The images which feature yellow quite prominently are firstly some yellow flowers on a shrub, and later on yellow leaves on a tree in our garden.

Thank you to Harvey and Daisy for helping me with this week’s theme by scouting and being my muses. Harvey looks a little worse for wear at the moment as he has had a skin allergy which is now under control thankfully! We think it may be related to his IMPA which overcame him last July.

Beautiful images and gorgeous bokeh, but for some reason only the first 2 are showing to me.

That is definitely some creamy and dreaming bokeh – so much so that I want to spread it on a piece of toast! Gorgeous!
